Micro organisms - Yeast experiment

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 6 Year: 2014 - 2015

As part of their work on micro organisms, Year 6 carried out an investigation to discover whether yeast reacted more in cold, warm or hot water. They placed the yeast in plastic bottles containing water of different temperatures and then placed a balloon on top of each. By observing the balloon they were able to tell which temperature had caused the yeast to react the most as when it reacts it emits Carbon Dioxide thus causing the balloon to inflate. The yeast in the warm water caused the greatest inflation of the balloon and therefore the greatest reaction of the yeast.
