Debt Awareness

We know that going into ‘debt’ is a real worry for our older children. We know this because when we asked them in summer (as part of our ‘Health and Wellbeing Survey’) a huge number of children said that they were worried about not having enough money to meet the necessities of daily life. Sadly, our own pupils were much more anxious about money matters than children from other schools.

With this in mind, Mrs Jennifer Young, Y6 teacher, linked with the national ‘Debt Aware’ programme to provide a series of training sessions to develop ‘money skills for life’ and allay some of these fears.

The sessions were led by money management expert Mr Brian Souter. The aims were to  develop a sound and sensible attitude towards money and raise the awareness of planning for the future.

“We were able to show that with careful money management and realistic expectations, pupils need not worry about money…” said Mrs Ryder, Head Teacher, “This course has been a huge success- we are honoured to be one of the first schools to be become an ‘accredited’ money management school.”

School now aims to introduce the programme as a regular feature of its Y5 & Y6 programme.
