WW1 writing competition success!

Congratulations Kayne!

Y5 participated in a creative writing competition at Central Library.

The theme was World War One and we wrote diary entries as a soldier in the trenches. Out of hundreds of entries Kayne received a 'Highly Commended' award along with a prize. Well done we are very proud of your achievement smiley

Below is Kayne's entry:

Dear Diary,

The time has come... After months of living in this wasteland the Captain called for me and my crew to go to no man’s land. I was petrified, petrified because this might be the end. On the other hand, I’ve met some new friends during my time in these filthy trenches. One of my friends is called Lieutenant Joe. My two others are called Sergeant John and Captain Raybull. They are all nervous about going to no man’s land and so am I…

Conditions in the trenches are horrific. They are getting worse. The rats (disgusting creatures) run all around the trenches. They come at night and crawl all over us. The trenches flood every year and leaches slide around us. The trenches are full of dirt and mud. They are not nice to sleep in. I can see the dry mud falling apart and the trenches are ruined by the bombs.

Will I ever survive this tragic war? The Germans have took over the other side of the field. I still believe that we can win this war and I still have hope. We have lost soldiers but we still have some men left. So me and the rest of my crew will fight for our country and our lives. We won’t give up and we’ll never let the Germans take over. The Germans started it but we’re going to finish it!
