Year 6 Mexico Morning!

Lesson: History

Class: Year 6 Year: 2015 - 2016

Our next History Topic in Year 6 is 'The Ancient Mayans' and so to start off their learning on this fascinating culture, Year 6 enjoyed a Mexican Morning. This is because modern day Mexico was once part of an area known as 'Mesoamerica' where the ancient Mayans lived and built their infamous temples.

We conducted internet research into Mexico and researched important facts such as: the capital, the population, the climate, famous landmarks, food, sport and terrain.

We then prepared our own tacos and nachos ... some children were even brave enough to try a jalapeno chilli on their tacos!!

Finally Year 6 learned about Mrs Young's favourite artist, Frida Kahlo. Mrs Young told the children about her tragic yet inspiring story and showed the children examples of her artwork. All of Frida's art includes a picture of herself - this is because she spent most of her time alone and famously quoted, 'I am the subject I know best.'

The children then used pencil and oil pastels to produce their own self portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo (monobrows a must of course!!)

All in all a great day was had by all!!
