What happens to the food we eat?

Lesson: Science

Class: Year 4 Year: 2016 - 2017

To start our science topic on the digestive system, Year 4 set up a working model to show exactly what happens to the food we eat! We used digestive biscuits and banana as food, water as saliva and orange juice as stomach acid. We mashed it all together and then used a leg from a a pair of tights to represent the small intestine. The juice that escaped from the leg of the tights showed how our bodies absorbs goodness we need from our food and the food left inside the 'small intestine' showed how are bodies leave waste products behind in the rectum. It was a slimy and smelly experiment but it was lots of fun and truly helped our understanding!
